About Open Door Chapel:
Open Door Chapel was founded as a spiritual resource for GLBT (gay male, lesbian, bisexual and transgender) Christians in 1975.  Services are held on Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m., and include music, scripture readings and prayers. Because Open Door Chapel is non-denominational, the worship reflects the wide variety of Christians who make it up. Open Door Chapel is open to everyone, GLBT and non-GLBT alike.  Each week's service includes a sermon by the pastor or a visiting member of the clergy.  Each service also includes a celebration of communion. Dress is casual. Although an offering is taken, no donation is required. Ten percent of the collection is placed in a fund for charitable causes. Members gather for fellowship and refreshments after the service.
Locations my vary depending on the activity.   Sunday evening worship (at 7:30 p.m.) is held at the Tree of Life Missionary Baptist Church located at 520 E. Washington Blvd. (corner of Monroe).  Midweek services are held in Mother Maria's home, located at 4121 Lahmeyer Road Apt. 61 (near the Ancfhor Room bookstore).   A Bible study called FOCUS (Focusing On Christ Using Scripture) meets from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month beginning again on April 22nd.  The location will be announced.
The monthly newsletter "The Open Door" is mailed to its members, benefactors and anyone who requests it.  Additionally, this schedule is published seasonally and includes the location of each activity.  Potluck dinners will be scheduled throughout the year at times and places to announced.  In June, a Pride picnic is held at Rockhill Park.
The pastor, Mother MariaAlene VanValkenburg, is available for conversation and prayer. She is also available to plan Holy Unions/weddings with couples. Mother Maria will also perform funerals and baptisms and celebrations of reconciliation as needed. She is a member of OCCA, the Orthodox Catholic Church in America. She can be reached either through the GLBT Hotline at 424-1199, through postal mail at Open Door Chapel, P.O. Box 8187, Fort Wayne 46898 her email, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
