Gay/Lesbian Hotline

About Hotline:
The Gay/Lesbian Hotline is a telephone (424-1199) crisis intervention, information and referral service for the GLBT community.  Reports of violence or harassment against people in the GLBT community can be registered through Hotline to be shared with the local Metro Commission and the state organization Justice, Inc., who in turn forwards them to the Indiana Civil Rights Commission.  Hotline is a 24-hour/7-day service.  During the following hours the phones are staffed live:  Monday-Thursday 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday-Saturday 7 p.m. to midnight; and Sunday 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Non-staffed hours are serviced by answering machine.

The Gay/Lesbian Hotline started in June 1980 as a function of Open Door Chapel, but moved into the community center as an independent entity in 1982.  The organization has three officers, but is governed generally by consensus of its staff.  Volunteers are put through a six-hour training course with regular staff members before being assigned to duty on the phone.
